Help with food shopping

Getting Your Groceries During COVID crisis.

We know that shopping has become a lot harder for some people during this time. So we have put together a list of some of the options and services available for folks in our local area. If anyone has anything to add or has any experiences to share of using any of these, please do get in touch.

Food Packages

People who receive a letter from the Scottish Government can apply for government food packages with the information on that letter.

For people who need it and who are not eligible for the government’s package, if you live in North Edinburgh you can call Freshstart: 0131 356 0220. Or if you live in Granton you can email us: info@grantoncommunitygardeners.org

If you live anywhere in Edinburgh you can also try this Council phoneline: 0131 200 2306

Groceries

Priority Deliveries: For those who got the letter from the Scottish Government, you should be eligible for priority deliveries from supermarkets. This is the normal paid for delivery service, but you are guaranteed a delivery soon after you make the order. Most other people can only get delivery slots a week or more from placing the order.

Morrisons Free Delivery: Morrisons has started a free delivery service for those who cannot leave their homes. To use this service, you should call 0345 611 6111 and go to option 5. Morrisons have a list of essential food and hygiene items that you can choose from over the phone and they will then deliver within 24 hours. You don’t need the letter from the government from this, you should just have to explain why you are unable to go to the shops during the lockdown period.

Click and Collect: Asda in Newhaven and Morrisons off of West Granton Road both offer Click and Collect options. This is a good option if you are self-isolating and are vulnerable because you can pick up your groceries without having to go into the store at the pick-up point in the car park. At the moment, you need to order 7 days in advance to book your pick up time. You can also have a friend pick up your groceries, if you give them the click and collect code that you get with your groceries.

North Edinburgh Arts has also set up a system of matching volunteers to help people who can use the Click and Collect option but can’t collect themselves. (see flyer at bottom of page)

If none of these options are of any help to you, and you are still struggling to buy food, then get in touch and we will see how we can help.
