What counts as 'nature'?

We are looking for photos of our wild local nature - plants and trees, animals big and small, fungi and the wider landscape. 

Pets, garden ornamental plants and humans (however wild!) don’t count. Neither do wild animals that have been caught or captured. However, a great photo of a wild bee on a garden flower, or spider in your kitchen would still be fab - our wild nature is of course mixed in with domestic things everywhere around us.

What do we mean by local? We ask that your photos be taken in the North Edinburgh area with our particular focus being the EH5 postcode area and the associated sea / coastline. (We wont be too precise about boundaries as nature definitely is not!)

We ask that you aim to honestly record the nature around you, without causing harm or distress. Make sure you avoid using distressing lighting or noise, getting too close, or disturbing nests, for example.

Photography guidelines

You are welcome to use whatever kind of camera you have, including of course your phone. We’d ask that you avoid AI but you are welcome to use camera app adjustments and filters should you wish, provided the photo stays ‘honest’ to the original experience. Please do not add or remove features, or paint out the foreground or background. Black and white photography is welcome.

We will accept photos through an online form or by email - please send them at full size, and turn off the Live function if you have used that. Details at the bottom of this page. The ownership of the photo will remain with you, unless you choose to donate the rights to it.

We’ll ask you to submit your photo into an age range:

• primary school age and under 

• secondary school age 

• adult 

We'll also place your photo in a category (or you can let us know your choice). Depending on numbers, we may stick some categories together. 

If you have loads of great photos, please just send us your best three. You are welcome to send photos you have taken in previous years if you wish.

Entry guidelines

This competition is focusing on EH5 and we will prioritise people who live, work, volunteer or have regular commitments in this area. However, we are open to all with connections to North Edinburgh.

Exhibition

We hope to exhibit people’s photos in a community celebration event at Granton Parish Church in late autumn. If you submit a photo we will keep you informed about the plans. We can’t promise to display every photo but we will do our best to create an exhibition that includes as many people as possible. We will let you know if your photo will be displayed and invite all entrants along to see the exhibition.

Photos will be up during the week for anyone accessing the church, and we will hold an exhibition launch event with catering from Granton Garden Bakery. During your time at the exhibition, you’ll be asked to vote for your favourite pictures and we’ll have a couple of expert judges too. Winners will receive glory and a Granton Garden Bakery voucher. Everyone will be able to take away the print of their picture.
